Visiting Machu Picchu had always been on my bucket list, and the experience was even more incredible than I had imagined. From the historic streets of Cusco to the breathtaking train ride through the Sacred Valley, every moment of the journey was filled with adventure, culture, and stunning landscapes.
Arriving in Cusco & The Sacred Valley
Our adventure began in Cusco, the heart of the Incan Empire. Since the city sits at over 11,000 feet, we took it slow on the first day, strolling through the charming streets, sipping coca tea, and adjusting to the altitude. The mix of colonial architecture, lively markets, and ancient ruins made Cusco an incredible place to explore.
After acclimating, we headed to the Sacred Valley, where the air was fresher and the scenery was absolutely stunning. With its green valleys, Incan terraces, and picturesque villages like Ollantaytambo, it was the perfect place to relax before the big adventure.
One of the highlights was seeing alpacas and llamas roaming freely in the countryside and even at some of the historic sites. These adorable animals are an important part of Peruvian culture, known for their soft, warm wool, which is used to make the famous alpaca sweaters, scarves, and blankets. We even got to feed some alpacas at a local farm, which was such a fun experience!

The Scenic Train Ride to Machu Picchu
One of the most exciting parts of the trip was the train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. The journey itself was a highlight—massive green mountains, the rushing Urubamba River, and an ever-changing landscape made the ride feel like something out of a movie. As we approached our destination, the excitement was palpable.

Exploring the Lost City of the Incas
Arriving at Machu Picchu was an emotional moment. The ancient stone pathways, mist-covered peaks, and breathtaking terraces made it easy to see why this place is considered one of the greatest wonders of the world. We wandered through the ruins with a guide, learning about the history of the Incas and the mysteries surrounding the site.
For those looking to add even more adventure to their visit, there are several incredible hikes:
Huayna Picchu – The famous peak overlooking Machu Picchu offers a steep but rewarding climb with jaw-dropping views.
Machu Picchu Mountain – A longer, more challenging hike with panoramic views of the entire region.
The Inca Trail – If you're up for a multi-day trek, the classic Inca Trail is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, leading hikers through breathtaking landscapes, cloud forests, and ancient Incan sites before arriving at Machu Picchu at sunrise.

Beyond Machu Picchu: Climbing Rainbow Mountain
For those with extra time in Cusco, another incredible experience is visiting Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). Located about three hours from the city, this stunning natural wonder is famous for its vibrant colors, created by mineral deposits in the rock. The hike to the top is challenging due to the altitude (over 17,000 feet!), but those who make it are rewarded with breathtaking views of the multicolored peaks.
Back in Cusco: Food, Drinks & Celebrations
After days of exploring, we returned to Cusco, ready to indulge in some of Peru’s best food. We tried lomo saltado, fresh ceviche, and other traditional dishes bursting with flavor. And of course, we couldn’t leave without enjoying a classic Pisco Sour—a refreshing and slightly tangy cocktail that quickly became a favorite!
Final Thoughts
Machu Picchu was more than just a destination—it was an experience, a journey through history, nature, and culture that I’ll never forget. From hiking through the mountains to exploring ancient ruins, meeting alpacas, and tasting incredible food, every part of the trip left me in awe. If you ever get the chance to visit, go for it—you won’t regret it!
